Named "Switzerland of the East" by Queen Elizabeth II — a lush paradise of dense pine forests, gushing rivers, turquoise alpine lakes and Pakistan's only ski resort, accessible all year round just 5 hours from Islamabad.
Swat Valley, stretching through the Malakand Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is one of Pakistan's most beloved and easily accessible mountain destinations. Unlike Hunza or Skardu which require long drives or flights, Swat is just 5 hours from Islamabad on the Swat Motorway — making it the perfect escape for a long weekend or a full family holiday.
The valley is defined by the Swat River — a rushing, crystal-clear glacial stream that flows the length of the valley past green orchards, riverside bazaars and traditional Pashtun villages. As you travel north through Bahrain, Madyan and into Kalam, the valley narrows and the forests grow denser, culminating in the breathtaking alpine scenery of Mahodand Lake at 3,000 metres.

A stunning turquoise alpine lake at 3,000m in Ushu Valley — surrounded by the Hindu Kush mountains

Swat was the ancient kingdom of Gandhara — home to 2,000-year-old Buddhist stupas, monasteries and rock carvings
