Heaven on Earth — a 200km emerald ribbon of dense forests, gushing rivers, turquoise lakes and Himalayan peaks winding through Pakistan's most serene and soul-stirring valley.
Neelum Valley, stretching 200 kilometres northeast of Muzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir, is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful valleys in all of Pakistan. Named after the Neelum River — whose waters shift from silver-grey to brilliant turquoise blue as you travel deeper into the valley — this is a place that genuinely feels untouched by time.
The valley is framed by the towering Himalayan and Pir Panjal ranges, draped in dense cedar and pine forests, and dotted with rushing waterfalls, alpine lakes and traditional Kashmiri villages. At its far end, Taobat — the last village before the Line of Control — sits at 1,981m and is considered one of the most remote and beautiful spots in Azad Kashmir.
The lifeline of the valley — changes colour from grey to brilliant blue-green as you travel upstream
Flanked by the Himalayas and Pir Panjal range — snow-capped peaks visible throughout the valley
Home to snow leopards, Himalayan brown bears, musk deer and hundreds of rare bird species
Ancient seat of learning — a 5,000-year-old historic site at Sharda visited by the scholar Al-Biruni
