Overview

A 200km Paradise That
Takes Your Breath Away

Neelum Valley, stretching 200 kilometres northeast of Muzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir, is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful valleys in all of Pakistan. Named after the Neelum River — whose waters shift from silver-grey to brilliant turquoise blue as you travel deeper into the valley — this is a place that genuinely feels untouched by time.

The valley is framed by the towering Himalayan and Pir Panjal ranges, draped in dense cedar and pine forests, and dotted with rushing waterfalls, alpine lakes and traditional Kashmiri villages. At its far end, Taobat — the last village before the Line of Control — sits at 1,981m and is considered one of the most remote and beautiful spots in Azad Kashmir.

🚩

A Unique Feature: The Line of Control (LoC) between Pakistan and India runs along the banks of the Neelum River. At Keran, visitors can clearly see both Pakistan and India flags flying across the river — a powerful and unforgettable sight found nowhere else in the world.

Everything You Need to Know

Key practical information to help you plan a smooth and safe Neelum Valley trip.

🛣 How to Get There

From Islamabad: ~155 km via Murree Expressway → Kohala → Muzaffarabad → Neelum Road. Drive: 4–5 hours to Keran.

From Lahore: ~380 km via M-2 motorway to Islamabad, then the Murree-Muzaffarabad route. Total: 6–7 hours.

Muzaffarabad to Sharda: ~120 km along the Neelum River Road. Carpeted road up to Dowarian, rough jeep track from Sharda to Kel and Taobat.

Important: Road beyond Sharda towards Kel requires a 4×4 jeep. We include all jeeps in our packages.

📅 Best Time to Visit

April–May: Valley wakes up after winter. Snow melts, rivers run full. Less crowded, cool and fresh. Perfect for couples.

June–July: Peak season. Lush green, all roads open, Ratti Gali Lake accessible. Busiest months — book in advance.

August–September: Monsoon brings fresh greenery. September especially beautiful — clear skies, golden light, fewer tourists.

October–March: Roads to upper valley close. Snowfall makes Taobat, Kel and Arang Kel inaccessible. Muzaffarabad remains open.

🏨 Where to Stay

Keran: Keran Resort — riverside cottages with stunning LoC views. Highly recommended for a romantic first night.

Sharda: Several good hotels in town — Sharda Valley Hotel is a reliable choice near the ruins and river.

Kel & Arang Kel: Basic guest houses available. Arang Kel village has charming wooden huts with meadow views.

Upper valley hotels are basic. Book well in advance June–August. We pre-book all stays for our packages.

💡 Essential Tips

CNIC required: All visitors must register at checkposts at Kel. Carry your original Pakistani ID card at all times.

Jeep mandatory from Sharda to Kel and Taobat — road is rough and only 4×4 vehicles can safely pass.

Cash only beyond Muzaffarabad. No ATMs in the valley. Carry sufficient PKR before entering Neelum Road.

Best network: Zong has the widest coverage in Neelum Valley. PTCL Evo also works in some areas.

Respect local culture: Neelum is a conservative area. Dress modestly, especially in villages and near checkposts.
